Growth
Introduction
Working throughout this course, I have developed a theory of writing. My approach is that to become a successful writer; to create a framework for success, one must formulate many habits of mind.
Struggles
As a reader, I struggle to understand the instructions from an assignment because I have trouble using the habit of engagement which causes me to lose involvement. English 101 is an online course, and I tend to do my tasks late at night from home, which causes me to get easily distracted. I decided to change my sleeping schedule after the first WP, and I noticed a drastic change. I now attend my local Starbucks to do my assignments and seeing others engaged in their work has motivated me to become more involved with the information I read. I still struggle a bit and may have to read over a section a few times until I comprehend not as distracted.
As a writer, I struggle with writing processes. At times I doubt my words as I am writing. Then I realize that is what free write is all about, to write without worrying if the writing sounds right, still, I can not help but wanting to revise as I go. Which will cause me to slow down on my writing and lose the ideas I have thought of at the moment.
As a critical thinker, I struggle with persistence which is staying interested in a topic for either a short or long time. I have realized that when it comes to evaluating an issue, I tend to walk away from it instead of trying to seek judgment on a topic that second which has caused me to forget what my initial reaction was. So when I come back to do some critical thinking, I do not look too deep into the structure of a question or topic. For example, On this actual project I procrastinated my assignment and now am having trouble digging deep into my thoughts and experiences to do critical thinking.
Accomplishments
As a reader, when I do read over my writing a few more times than usual, I catch errors well and leads to less revision down the line. Also, I can understand the prompt easier by re-reading.
As a writer, I continue to be responsible and be knowledgeable about who my audience is so that I may make a clear point with the correct dialect. While enhancing the knowledge of writing process, I can create different approaches to a topic. For example, building an outline so that I am not stuck on deciding what to free-write.
As a critical thinker, I have accomplished to become responsible for producing my ideas. I believe that working on the writing journals has encouraged me to keep me considering different viewpoints.
Abilities
As a reader, I have been able to proofread by reading my sentences backward which have led me to catch any phrases that do not transition smoothly. Reading this way has also led me to look at others writing with more thought.
As a writer, I know can write a variety of text because of the writing journals we have been doing in this course. The different topics discussed in the discussion boards have generated me to take on respectful comments to appeal to my peers.
As a critical thinker, I have been practicing to judge my work after completing the writing journals. I can reflect and criticize and see if I have met the requirements by answering all the questions.
My Writing, Outcomes, and Habits of Mind
Rhetorical Knowledge
My writing in this course has led me to understand a variety of technologies to address a range of audiences. A few examples of the different techniques I have used would be joining in the discussion boards and addressing my peers while also interacting with them. Another example would be the writer's journals which are posted in my ePortfolio that is available to the public eye. Lastly, my writing projects which all have been on different genres of writing and have my teachers as my primary audience. All of these different rhetorical writing have many purposes that have caused me to be aware of my choice of words.
Critical Thinking, Reading, and Composing
Some activities that have helped me use "composing and reading for inquiry, learning, critical thinking, and communicating in various rhetorical contexts" would be the writer's journal I did throughout this course especially after reading an article. After reading articles, I gained a skill of analyzing the text and being able to interpret this into my writing. One example would be when I worked on WP #2, and I had to observe and communicate the vibe to my audience so they can gain a picture in their head.
Processes
I found my peer reviews to be very helpful in helping me distinguish my different stages of working. Peer review enabled me to "experience the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes." by allowing me to check other's work and giving productive feedback to them as well as receiving feedback. Through this process, I gained a new set of eyes and was also to transition over to revision without the hassle of wondering what I feel I should work on my writing.
Knowledge of Conventions
During this process, I learned to "examine the underlying logic in commonly used citation systems" by using MLA format. This technique is critical when writing because there may sometimes be another person's ideas that will add to your text and to do so you must credit their ideas since they are not your own. Also, it is considered plagiarism if you use someone else's ideas as your own without crediting or using the proper citation format.
Curiosity and Flexibility
I chose these habits of mind to approach my learning in this course because I want to grow as an individual and I desire to know more about the world through reading and writing which are the bases of communication. What has helped me develop through this course is being flexible and adjusting to the college student lifestyle and making sure I meet the demands of the work assigned so that I can achieve the WPA outcomes.
My Growth, My Writing, My Future
Academic Projects
In my future academic projects, I look forward to using all of my acquired knowledge in this ENG 101 course to use throughout my whole college experience with Arizona State University and using the habit of engagement to remain invested in my studies.
Professional Projects
This coursework will help me succeed at work because I am sure I will encounter different thought patterns and cultures so I will use the habit of openness to considering new ways of exploring ideas. Also, I will use responsibility to own up to any mistakes or consequences so that I may continue to mature in my job position and gain others respect. In the future, I plan on working in the field on design and possibly working from home so I must also be flexible by adapting to a new work environment.
Personal Projects
In this course, I have noticed a lot of crossover between private and the public, and some of my projects might be influenced by my growth as a reader, writer, and critical thinker. This action might happen because I plan on becoming an industrial designer and I need to be able to read client's demands and write what I plan on developing and how. Also, a lot of critical thinking will come into play because there will be times when I need to research what might work or not for an idea and also challenge my assumptions.
